About Kumbh Mela

During the churning of the ocean, the ocean yields a sacred pitcher filled with nectar. Lord Vishnu, in the form of Mohini, hands over this pitcher to his ride, Garuda. While Garuda was carrying the pitcher to heaven, a few drops of nectar accidentally fell at four places, known as Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. The churning of the ocean between the Gods and the Demons lasted for 12 divine days. As per the legend, one day of the gods (Deva) is equal to 12 years of Earth, which is why the Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years.
