Situated at the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, the beauty of Rudraprayag city is a sight to behold. Renowned as one of the Panch Prayag, Rudraprayag is located 174 km from Dehradun and 392 km from Delhi. According to scholars, the name of Rudraprayag has been derived from the Rudra incarnation of Lord Shiva. It is said that Sage Narad worshiped Lord Shiva to gain mastery in music and Lord Shiva appeared to him in the Rudra incarnation.
Badrinath and Kedarnath are located 150 km and 50 km away from this place, thus referred to as the gateway to these dhams. Rudraprayag's weather remains cold throughout the year and attracts a multitude of visitors. From here, tourists may visit some popular holy places such as Kartik Swami, Koteshwar Mahadev, Triyuginarayan and Tungnath, the ancient temple of Shiva situated at the highest place in the world.
According to the legend, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas came to this place to pray to Lord Shiva for atonement to the death of their kin. Despite living in adverse conditions, the people of Rudraprayag have preserved their tradition and culture, with events like Pandav dance, Baisakhi fair, Hariyali Devi fair and Madmaheshwar fair being prominent. The major attractions that draw tourists from afar are Guptkashi (famous for Vishwanath Temple), Chopta, Kalimath, Omkareshwar Temple, Vasuki Tal, Deoria Tal, and Badhani Tal.

Situated 174 km from Dehradun ISBT, this destination is accessible by road. To access the location, visitors may avail of bus services from major bus stands such as Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Nainital, and Delhi. Along with that, shared taxi services are also available from major points of the state. The nearest railway station is in Haridwar, at a distance of 158 km, offering good connectivity from major states, while the nearest airport is in Dehradun, 160 km away.
Best Season To visit
While the location is open for pilgrimage and tourist round the year, the ideal time to visit is during February to May and September to November. It is advisable to exercise caution during the monsoon season.
