About

Tapt Kund is a natural hot water spring located in Badrinath. It lies on the banks of the Alaknanda River, near the entrance of the Badrinath Temple. As the name suggests, it produces hot water throughout the year, despite the cold weather conditions, which is truly remarkable. As per the legends, the hot water in Tapt Kund emerges from Garur Shilla, believed to be the abode of Agni Dev. Taking a holy dip before entering the shrine is a common ritual usually performed by the devotees. However, bathing in its hot water is not easy, as the temperature can reach up to 45 degrees.

Badrinath Tapt Kund

Located just 50 meters before the Badrinath Temple, Tapt Kund is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Its name is derived from a Sanskrit, where Tapt means "Hot" and Kund means a "reservoir". Devotees on their pilgrimage to Badrinath often bathe in the kund. The kund is located in an open area where mostly men bathe, while a separate bathing hall is created for women.

Along with its piousness, the water of the kund has the healing properties and the ability to purify the soul. Tapt Kund is accessible during the Char Dham Yatra, as harsh weather conditions make it difficult to access the site.

Narad Kund

Alongside Tapt Kund, there is another spring beneath it called as Narad Kund. Like Tapt Kund, Narad Kund is also a hot spring. However, due to its sanctity, bathing is not allowed in it.

It is believed that, Narad Muni performed a great penance at this site, hence it was named as Narad Kund. Both Tapt and Narad Kund hold great religious importance for devotees visiting to pay homage to Lord Badri. As per the scriptures, this is the same kund from where Adi Shankaracharya Ji recovered the idol of Lord Badri.
