Tapkeshwar

The Tapkeshwar Temple is situated in Dehradun Garhi Cantt, just 8 km from Dehradun City. Nestled on the banks of Tons river, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, which was established approximately 6000 years ago, during the Mahabharata period. Every year lakhs of devotees flock to this place to seek blessings of Lord Shiva. The temple is built on a natural cave, where two Shiva lingas can be found. Interestingly, water constantly drips from the cave, giving rise to the temple's name, Tapkeshwar. Whereas, other shivling is adorned with 5151 Rudraksha beads. Adjacent to the temple, there is a cave dedicated to Maa Santoshi and an idol of Lord Hanuman. As per the mythologist, Guru Dronacharya resided here with his better half, who gave birth to his immortal son, Aswathama. Legend says that when the mother was unable to feed the child, Lord Shiva created a cow udder atop the cave, which started dripping cows milk. Hence, Lord shiva is also known as Dudehswar Mahadev. It is believed that by offering water to the Shiva Linga, Lord Shiva fulfills the wishes of his devotees, this belief attracts people from afar. Every year during Shivratri and Saawan, a fair is organized here, which draws lots of pilgrims to partake in the festivities.
