Rudra Meditation Cave, a popular tourist attraction, is located around 1 km from the Kedarnath Temple complex. These caves are constructed by the Nehru Mountainerring Institute and are now managed by the Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC). Earlier, the registration for this cave was handled by GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam), but since September 2025, the cave has been under the management of s BKTC. Pilgrims wishing to stay for a day or more need to register online. After its inauguration, PM Modi spent around 17 hours. Since then, the cave has received huge popularity and is widely popular as the 'Modi Cave'.

Kedarnath Dhyan Gufa

Rudra Meditation Cave, also known as Dhyan Gufa, is set in a peaceful environment. The cave offers basic amenities, where pilgrims can experience solitude during their stay. It is around 5 metres long and three metres wide, which offers basic but essential facilities. The cave offered a breathtaking view of the Kedarnath Valley. This sacred place provides a unique opportunity to connect with the Almighty.

Amenities offered at Modi Cave

Being a modern cave, the Modi Cave comes equipped with basic amenities, which will be provided to pilgrims under each booking: -

  • Attached Bathroom.
  • Electricity
  • Heater.
  • Hot and Cold Water
  • CCTV and
  • Intercom for emergencies.

Note: An attendant will be provided by the authority, who will be present by pressing the bell inside the cave.

How to Book Modi Cave or Rudra Cave at Kedarnath?

To stay at the Kedarnath Dhyan Gufa, pilgrims must apply online. Earlier, the online registration process for Dhyan Gufa was carried out by the GMVN. Recently, the cave management has been transferred to the BKTC Committee. It is expected that the new registration will be conducted by the BKTC.

  • Tariff: At present, the price of the Modi Cave is around Rs 3,400/- (including GST).
  • Duration: The cave can be booked for a minimum of one day or a maximum of 3 days.
  • Eligibility: Pilgrims must be medically fit to stay in a cave alone.

Location and Accessibility

The Rudra Meditation Cave is situated around 1 km uphill from the Kedarnath Temple. Pilgrims must trek to reach the location, whose path is mostly well-paved.

Accommodation

Both Sonprayag and Gaurikund offer a variety of accommodation facilities, such as hotels, Homestays, lodges, and camps. These can be booked online or on arrival. Along with this, accommodation options are also available in the Kedarnath Valley.

Important Tips for Travellers

  • Char Dham Yatra Registration is a must for all pilgrims.
  • The vehicle will not be permitted beyond Sonprayag.
  • From Sonprayag, shuttle services are available up to Gaurikund.
  • ATMs are available at Gaurikund and Kedarnath.
  • Carry enough water and keep your body hydrated during the trek.
  • Be cautious while climbing or descending, as mules carrying luggage or pilgrims may hit you.
  • Start your trek early, so you may reach Dham before dusk.
  • The cave can be booked for a minimum of 24 hours.
  • A medical checkup at Kedarnath is a must for the pilgrim.
  • Pilgrims found unfit will not be allowed to stay.

How to Reach

By Road: - Rudra Meditation Cave is located about 1 km from the Kedarnath Temple. To access it, you have to first reach the Kedarnath Temple, which is about 222 km from Rishikesh Bus Stand. It can be reached up to Gaurkiund (last motorable point) by road using bus, shared taxi and cabs. From there, pilgrims must trek around 15 km to reach the shrine.
 

By Rail: - The closest railway station is Yog Nagri Rishikesh Railway Station. However, better connectivity is provided by Haridwar Railway Station, which is around 232 km away. From both stations, buses and taxis are easily available.
 

By Air: - The nearest airport to its last motorable point is Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport, around 225 km away. From the airport, visitors can book only private taxis, while for other options, they need to travel to Rishikesh, which is just 16 km away.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Rudra Cave is from May-June and September-October.
