About

The Triyuginarayan Temple is one of the most popular temples, located in the Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by tall, lush green mountains, the temple offers a captivating view of its natural surroundings.

It is believed that Triyuginarayan Temple is the sacred site where Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. Because of this significance, many people visit here and even choose this place as a wedding destination for their marriage ceremonies. Moreover, the Uttarakhand government is also promoting the temple as a wedding destination.

Pilgrims can visit the temple throughout the year, but September to April is considered the most favourable time. Perched at a height of 6,500 feet, the temple is almost connected by a motorable road, with only a small distance to be covered on foot.

Why Triyuginarayan Temple called "Tri Yug"?

Uttarakhand is home to many temples that are dedicated to Lord Vishnu, but Triyuginarayan stands tall among them. This ancient temple is situated in the Rudraprayag district, around 252 km away from Dehradun. It is believed that the temple was built by the revered Hindu Guru Adi Shankaracharya during the 8th century. The current structure of the temple quite resembles the renowned Kedarnath Temple.

Inside the temple premises, there is a square-shaped Hawan Kund (a place of sacrificial fire), where devotees have been offering wood for three eras, thus the temple is known as "Tri Yug" (three Eras). It is believed that this sacred fire has been burning continuously since the celestial marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Due to this eternal flame, the temple is also known as 'Akhand Dhuni Temple,' with 'Akhand' meaning 'Perpetual' and 'Dhuni' referring to its sacred fire. The temple also houses a sacred stone known as Brahma Shila, and is regarded as the actual spot where the divine marriage took place.

Mythology of Triyuginarayan Temple

According to the mythologist, Parvati, the daughter of Himavat or Himavan, tried to win the love of Lord Shiva. After several failed attempts, she undertook a rigorous penance in Gaurikund, located around 5 km from the actual shrine. As described in the Shiva Puran, Lord Shiva later proposed marriage to Parvati at Guptkashi, where the current Vishwanath Temple stands. Devotees visiting Triyuginarayan Temple also offer their prayers at the Goddess Parvati temple in Gaurikund, which is considered to be the same place where Goddess Parvati undertook penance.

Holy Kund of Triyuginarayan Temple

The shrine complex includes four holy kunds that are highly regarded: Rudra Kund, Vishnu Kund, Brahma Kund, and Saraswati Kund. Among them, Saraswati Kund is notable, as it is said that water from this kund flows into the other three kunds. It is believed that this water originates from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Bathing in this kund is considered beneficial, especially for women facing infertility issues. Apart from Saraswati Kund, the other Kunds too have their own significance, as Rudra Kund is used for bathing, Vishnu kund used for cleansing, and Brahma Kund is for sipping.
