Neeleshwar Mahadev Temple

Neeleshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most significant shrines in Haridwar. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is situated on Nil Parvat (Blue Mountain) along the Haridwar-Najibabad Highway. According to the priest, Mughal ruler Aurangzeb tried to break this Shivling during this reign. After many failed attempts, he left the side. The marks of the failed attempt are still visible on the Shivling, which gives it a deformed appearance.

Haridwar is among the four holy sites, along with Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj, where the drops of the elixir of immortality fall during the Samdura Manthan. However, the town is also associated with another significance related to this cosmic event.
 

According to the mythology, when poison emerges during the Samudra Manthan, and neither gods nor devils are willing to accept it, then Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the world. It is believed that the present Nileshwar Temple stands at the same site where Lord Shiva drank this poison.
 

Due to its ill effects, not only Lord Shiva's throat but also the entire region and even the water of the River Ganga turned blue. This is why the mountain on which the temple is situated is known as Neel Parvat. After consuming the poison, Lord Shiva proceeded to Neelkanth, where the renowned Neelkanth Mahadev Temple stands today.
 

In addition, legends state that this is the same site where Lord Shiva arrived after his consort, Sati, self-immolated in the sacrificial fire. In his immense grief and rage, Lord Shiva shakes his dreadlocks and throws them in the air, which leads to the manifestation of Veerbhadra, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. The Virbhadra Temple in Rishikesh stands today at the same location today.
