Kalishila
About
Dedicated to Goddess Sati, the Kalishila Temple is situated near Raunlek Village in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. After Kalimath, it is considered one of the most sacred and revered shrines in the region. Devotees from far and wide visit the temple to seek the blessing of the deity. Unlike Kalimath, the Kalishila shrine is not easily accessible, as pilgrims must hike a distance of 2 km. Known for its intense spiritual energy, it is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths of the Goddess Sati. Pilgrims can reach Kalishila from both Kalimath and from Raunlek village, the latter is the most preferred route.
Kalishila
Perched at an altitude of above 7,000 feet, the temple offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding region. From the Hilltop, one can sight various snow-capped peaks, especially Chaukhamba and Kedarnath. Devotees with deep faith in Maa Kali often visit this sacred place to seek her blessings. Located 65 km away from Rudraprayag and 198 km from Rishikesh, the temple is easily accessible by using shared taxis and buses. However, it lacks direct connectivity, and pilgrims need to change two or three vehicles to reach there.
Why is it called Kalishila?
In general, Kalishila is called "Black Rock", where "Kali" means "Black" and "Shila" means Rock. Similar to Kalimath, this temple doesn't possess an idol of Maa Kali. Instead, the deity is worshipped in the form of the Shri Yantra, placed beneath a big rock. The Kalishila rocks hang at an angle of 45 degrees on the mountain's edge, making it extremely difficult to complete the parikrama (Circumambulation). Only a few devoted pilgrims manage to complete it.
History of Kalishila
The Kalishila Temple holds great significance in Hindu mythology. It is believed to be the same place where Goddess Parvati transformed into Maa Kaali after being pleased by the Gods. After knowing about the atrocities committed by the demons Shumbh, Nishumbh, and Raktabeej, Maa Bhagwati became so enraged that her body turned black, giving her fierce form, Maa Kaali.
Thereafter, Maal Kaali destroyed the demons with the power of the 64 Yantra. Shumbh and Nishumbh are said to be slain at Neet Parvat in Haridwar, where the current Chandi Devi Temple is located. On the other hand, the Raktabeej was killed by the Goddess at Kalimath.
Local belief also states that Kalishila Temple is the place where the Goddess Sati was reborn as Goddess Parvati.
