About

One of the four revered Mahasu, the Hanol Mahasu temple, is located on the Tiuni-Mori road, about 172 km from Dehradun. Local people have deep faith in Lord Mahasu, which is quite evident, along with this, pilgrims come from afar to learn about the Mahasu deity and to seek his blessings. Situated just 30 km from the Himachal border, this temple is connected very well by road, accessible via bus and taxi. Mahasu is considered to be a group of four brothers (Bashik, Pavasi, Chalda, and Botha), with the temple located at Hanol dedicated to Botha and Pavasi Maharaj Ji.

Venerated as God of Justice, Mahasu Maharaj Lotapani adjuration system is still prevalent, which settles disputes between the people. Most of the Hanol Mahasu temple is crafted of Cedar wood and its intricate hand crafted design is awe inspiring. Situated on the banks of Tons River amidst natural splendor, the enchanting beauty of the temple is worth seeing especially during dusk and dawn. Locals and pilgrims often witness the morning and evening aarti ceremonies.

Within the temple, visitors may observe two round stones believed to be the marbles of Bhimsen. It is believed that only a person with a pure heart can lift these stones, whereas an egotistical mind will fail in the attempt. According to mythology, when Lord Krishna disappeared at the end of Dwapara Yuga, Pandavas followed him and reached this place in search of him. After crossing the Tons river, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, elated after seeing the beauty of this place and stayed here with Draupadi ji for 9 days, commissioned Vishwakarma ji to build a temple here.

The traditional Jagda festival, declared as a state fair, is eagerly awaited by the locals. During the Jagda, people perform their folk dances in their traditional costumes, attracting a large audience from far and wide.
