Gaurikud Temple is a sacred Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Parvati, popularly known as Gauri. Devotees visiting the Kedarnath Shrine or Triyuginarayan Temple often visit here to seek the deity's blessings. It is believed that Gaurikund is the same place where Goddess Parvati performed an intense penance to please Lord Shiva and win his love. Surrounded by the majestic Himalayan mountains, the temple is peacefully situated on the bank of the Mandakini River. Gaurikund is also known as the starting point of the Kedarnath Temple Trek, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year during the Char Dham Yatra.

Located in the Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand, Gaurikund Temple lies around 209 km from Rishikesh and holds great religious importance. Being located at the Kedarnath base camp, the temple is mostly visited by devotees during the Char Dham Yatra. However, devotees visiting Triyuginarayan Temple also mark their presence here to seek the deity's blessings. The temple houses the idol of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

Significance of Gaurikund Temple

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati is believed to be the reincarnation of Goddess Sati, and desired to marry Lord Shiva. She made several attempts to win Shiva's heart but failed miserably. Eventually, she decided to perform severe penance. For this, she mediated near Gaurikund, and it is believed to be the same place of penance where the current temple stands. Since then, the place has been highly revered, and devotees frequently visit to offer prayers.

Gaurikund Hot Water Spring

Like other shrines of the Char Dham circuit, Gaurikund also has a hot water spring, and is one of the most unique attractions. Devotees visiting the shrine or on a pilgrimage to Kedarnath usually bathe in this sacred kund. It is believed that taking a dip in the holy kund cures certain skin diseases.

By Road: Gaurikund Temple is about 209 km away from Rishikesh. To access the shrine, visitors can take a bus and shared taxi from Rishikesh Bus Stand. However, such services are available up to Sonprayag. From there, shuttle services are available frequently for Gaurikund and are the only mode to reach the shrine.
 

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Yog Nagri Rishikesh Railway Station, approximately 210 km away. Visitors can take a bus or shared taxis from the respective stands.
 

By Air: The closest airport to the shrine is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, approximately 224 km away. Services like buses and taxis can be availed from Rishikesh, which is just 16 km away from the airport.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the shrine is from April to May and September to November. Avoid the monsoon and peak winter seasons, when you may face several issues.
