Vasuki Tal - Kedarnath

Although Kedarnath Dham itself is a prominent place, it is surrounded by several places that attract both pilgrims and adventure enthusiasts. Sitting at an elevation of over 13,500 feet, Vasuki Tal or called Vasuki Lake, is a high altitude glacial lake on the route to the Doodhganga River. Its pristine water is so refreshing that, despite the cold conditions, visitors can't resist taking a dip in it. The lake is generally visited by adventure lovers who are on their pilgrimage to Kedarnath Mandir. Located around 8 km from the Kedarnath temple, Vasuki Lake produces breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The gigantic view of the Chaukhamba peak in the backdrop enhances its beauty and displays nature's wonder.

An Alpine Lake

Kedarnath Vasuki Tal Lake is located around 207 km from Rishikesh, which also includes a trek of 24 km. The panoramic views and the vibrant alpine flora add beauty to its charm. Besides its shimmering beauty, the lake is also surrounded by the rare Brahma Kamal. During summer, the lake's refreshing water creates a beautiful scene, while in winter, the lake transforms into a thick sheet of ice due to chilly weather conditions.

Kedarnatah Vasuki Tal Trek Route

The distance from Kedarnath Temple to Vasuki Tal is around 8 km and can be completed within a day. However, the actual trek route is 24 km, which starts from Gaurikund, the starting point of the Kedarnath Trek. The trail is rated as moderately difficult and requires prior trekking experience. After trekking a challenging stretch of 7 km, trekkers will reach Jaya-Vijaya Dhar, where the first glimpse of Vasuki Tal appears. In Hindu belief, Jaya and Vijaya are known as the gatekeepers of Lord Vishnu, and it feels like they are protecting this sacred place as well. Although the trail is quite long and a bit tough, the views it offers will captivate your heart, especially the first sight of the lake.

Mythology

Being close to the holy place, the lake is associated with Hindu Mythology. It is believed that on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Lord Vishnu visited this lake for a sacred bath. The lake is named after Vasuki, who is regarded as the King of serpents. Vasuki is known to be a big devotee of Lord Shiva, which is why he coiled himself around Shiva's neck. It is also believed that snakes bathe in this lake to attain utmost salvation.

Location and Accessibility

Vasuki Tal is located near Kedarnath in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Its distance from Rishikesh is around 231 km, including the trekking distance. The lake is well connected by road up to Gaurikund and is accessible by bus and taxi.
