About

Bhairavnath Temple, also known as Bhukund Bhairav Mandir, is situated near Kedarnath Temple. Situated on a hilltop about 800 meters south of Kedarnath Mandir, this temple is dedicated to Bhairavnath, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Bhairav Baba is said to be the protector of Kedarnath, as he safeguards the entire Kedarnath Valley when it remains closed due to heavy snowfall in winter. At Bhairav Chatti, Bhairon Bana is worshipped in the form of a Bhukund, holding a Trishul, with a dog as his Vahan.

Bhairavnath - The Kshetrapal of Kedarnath

Bhairon Baba is regarded as the Kshetrapal (protector) of the Kedarnath Valley. A Kshetrapal is traditionally known as the protector who safeguards the sacred area. During winters when the Kedarnath Temple is closed for six months, the Bhairav Baba protects the entire Valley. The spot where the Bhairav Nath Mandir stands gives you a panoramic view of the entire Kedarnath Valley.

Bhairavnath worshipped before Kedarbaba

Being the guardian of the Kedarnath Valley, Bhairavnath is worshipped before Kedarnath Baba. Devotees first offer their prayers at Bhairon Mandir, and then move forward to the Kedarnath Dham. It is believed that without visiting the Bhairav Temple, a devotee's pilgrimage will remain incomplete. From the temple, the entire valley is visible, which symbolises that Bhairavnath is protecting the Shivlok, i.e. Kedarnath Dham.
