Sri Anand Bhairav Mandir, Haridwar

Haridwar is popular for its several pilgrimage and religious sites, each holding its own spiritual and religious significance. Being one of the Ardh Kumbh sites, devotees from across the world visit this holy city in large numbers. During their visit, pilgrims usually explore popular places in Haridwar, primarily Har Ki Pauri and Shakti Peeths like Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi. However, apart from these well-known shrines, several other religious places have their own distinctive importance. Among them, the Anand Bhairav Temple is the most significant one.

Idol of Lord Bhairav with a Smiling Face

Situated near Bhairav Ghat, the Anand Bhairav Mandir is located just 1 km from the city bus stand. Standing in the middle of the city, the temple is easily accessible from all major areas. The temple houses a unique idol of Lord Bhairav with a smiling expression. This unique feature gives the deity the name Anand Bhairav, where Anand means happiness.

About Haridwar Aanand Bhairav Baba Mandir

It is believed that the temple has existed in the town through all four ages (Yugas), and the Shviling inside the temple is self-manifested, not enshrined by anyone. Generally, Lord Bhairav is considered the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. However, when Lord Shiva manifested from the supreme element, the form that emerged is self-manifested and known as Bhairav.

Anand Bhairav, the Kotwal of Mayapuri

Devotees from across the places visit this shrine in numbers. It is the faith and belief of devotees that whatever they wishes Ananad Bhairav always fulfils it. According to the shrine ritual, devotees usually offer a Chola and Shringar to the Anand Bhairav for the fulfilment of their wishes. Just as Kaal Bhairav is regarded as the Kotwal of Kashi, Anand Bhairav is worshipped as the Kotwal of Mayapuri (the ancient name of Haridwar).

Every day, several devotees attend the morning and evening prayers at the temple. Before visiting the shrine, devotees often take a holy dip at the Bhairva Ghat, which is situated within walking distance. Near the ghat, pilgrims can also find an Akhara, where they seek the blessings of Aghoris. As Goddess Maya Devi is considered the presiding deity of Haridwar, similarly, the Ananad Bhairav is the one who protects and safeguards the city and its people.
