About

Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi is located just behind the Kedarnath Temple, which is one of the most revered shrines in Hinduism. As we all know, Adi Shankaracharya played a vital role in spreading the Hindu philosophy and culture. He is one of the greatest philosophical minds, a scholar who laid the foundation of the four sacred Mathas. During his journey, he preached the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta after observing that most of the Hindus were not adhering to it.

It is believed that, during the 8th Century AD, Adi Shankaracharya restored the Kedarnath Shrine and chose this place as his final resting site. At the age of just 32, Adi Shankaracharya attained samadhi after merging his body at the ground near the Kedarnath Temple. However, the exact location of his samadhi is unknown. According to the scriptures, his disciples last saw him behind the Kedarnath Temple, and after which, he was never traced. To commemorate his contributions and impact on society, the government has constructed a Samadhi Sthal behind the Kedarnath Temple.

Shankaracharya Samadhi in Kedarnath

Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi Sthal (burial place) is one of the most visited places in Kedarnath. The inward spiral design of the Samadhi Sthal is so unique that it draws everyone's attention. Its design symbolises an inward energy, which is known as the 'Spiral of Life'. However, the main samadhi was built below the ground level to maintain the sanctity of the Kedarnath Temple.

A big statue of Adi Shankaracharya is placed at the centre of the Samadhi Sthal, and the ambient lighting at night gives it a distinctive appearance. After completing the worship at Kedarnath Temple, pilgrims visit this sacred site to pay their obeisance.
