Situated just 3 km from the Mall Road, Gun Hill offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges and surrounding valleys. Its unique name often intrigues visitors, who come to know why it is called Gun Hill. Visitors can access this popular spot by a scenic cable car ride or by hiking. Gun Hill Point Mussoorie remains open for visitors daily from 10 am to 6 pm.

Second Highest Point

After Lal Tibba, Gun Hill is considered the second-highest point in Mussoorie, which stands at an elevation of 2,122 meters. Thanks to its height, it offers breathtaking views of the nearby valleys and popular mountain ranges. For a closer look, you can use the telescope installed at the site. 
 

Gun Hill is located just 500 meters from the road and can be accessed either by hiking or by cable car. The cable car ride provides a serene view of the valley and a thrilling riding experience; on the other hand, hiking offers a more natural and immersive experience. It is an ideal spot for photographers who love to capture the beauty of nature through their lenses. Additionally, this site is also used as a water reservoir, supplying water to the nearby areas. 
 

Gun Hill is surrounded by small shops, which may somehow disturb the natural scenery. There are only a few dedicated viewpoints where you can completely enjoy the surrounding beauty; otherwise, visitors often choose to sit in the restaurant or cafes to enjoy such views.

History

The history of Gun Hill revolves around a story from the British period. It is said that during the British rule, the British Army usually fired a cannon at a specific time. This shot helped locals to know the exact time, which helped them to set their clocks accurately. During your visit, you will come across the remains of the old shooting range where this practice took place. A canon was also placed near the site as a symbol, reflecting its historical use. In addition to adjusting the clocks, the canon was sometimes fired to alert people in case of emergencies or danger.

Ropeway Services

Gun Hill Mussoorie is situated approximately 500 meters from the Mall Road and can also be accessed via the ropeway services. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding and prominent Himalayas peaks, namely Banderpoonch, Gangotri, Srikantha, and others. For this, visitors can purchase a Gun Hill Point ropeway ticket from its ticket counters. Here are some important things visitors should know before boarding the ropeway: -

  • Keep your ticket safely until the round trip is completed.
  • Children above three years of age must pay the full ticket price, while tickets are free for children below three years.
  • Tickets once sold will not be refunded.
  • Smoking is prohibited within the ropeway premises and inside the trolley.
  • The trolley trip number is mentioned on your ticket, please arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
  • Trolley timing can be checked on the digital display board.
  • If you miss your trolley or fail to arrive on time, you may have to wait up to 90 minutes for the next trip.
  • Boarding priority is given to women and senior citizens.

Temple

At the top of the hill, there are two temples- one dedicated to Shani Devi Ji and the other to Goddess Parvati. The goddess Parvati temple is situated near the entrance, while the Shani Dev temple is situated at the summit. Visitors can offer prayers and enjoy a scenic view of the surroundings, particularly from the Parvat Temple.

  • You can ride a two-wheeler up to the point; for this, you need to pay Rs 100 at the checkpost.
  • You can also bring a four-wheeler up to the Gun Hill hiking point, for this you will be charged Rs 150 at the checkpost.
  • Expect large crowds on weekends, so plan your visit accordingly.
  • Renting a two-wheeler from Mussoorie is the most convenient way to access the nearby areas.
  • You have to wait at least 60 minutes for the cable car due to heavy traffic, especially on weekends.
  • Food items are usually priced on the higher side, which may not be worth their price.
  • Carry some cash, as network failure may affect digital payments.

How to Reach

By Road: - Gun Hill Point is located at a distance of 3 km from Mussoorie and 36 km from Dehradun. Regular bus services to Mussoorie's Gun Hill are available from the Dehradun Hill Bus Stand. Gun Hill is around 3 km away from Mussoorie, which can be covered by shared taxi or two-wheeler rental services. Alternatively, visitors can hire a taxi directly from Dehradun to reach the place.
 

By Rail: - The nearest railway station is Dehradun Railway Station, about 35 km from Gun Hill. From the station, visitors can take a bus, hire a taxi, or use two-wheeler rental services. Recently, bike rental services have also started at Dehradun Railway Station, where visitors can rent a scooter for Rs 490/- on weekdays and Rs 590/- on weekends, while bikes are available at Rs 1,190/- on weekdays and Rs 1,290 on weekends.
 

By Air: - The nearest airport is Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport, around 60 km away. From the airport, taxis are readily available for Mussoorie.

The best time to visit Mussoorie's Gun Hill is from September to May, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing.
