Timmersain Mahadev

Timmersain Mahadev Temple is a small sacred cave located in Niti Village, Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this cave is known for its naturally formed ice shivling, which appears every year. The height of the shivling is around 2 to 3 feet, which is quite similar to the one that forms in the Amarnath Cave. Due to this resemblance to the Amarnath Shivling, the Timmersain Mahadev is popularly known as Chhota Amarnath of Uttarakhand. However, the local villagers also refer to the Shivling as "Baba Barfani". Surrounded by breathtaking landscape, the Timmersain Cave is nothing less than a hidden gem, offering a stunning panoramic view of the mountains and valleys.

Chhota Amarnath of Uttarakhand

Popularly known as Chhota Amarnath of Uttarakhand, the Timmersain Mahadev Cave has gained significant attention in recent years. Despite the challenging terrain, several tourists visit from far and wide to experience its natural beauty. The towering mountain and snow-covered peaks leave visitors mesmerised.
 

The cave is situated at an altitude of over 12,000 feet, which produces a scenic view all year round. During winters, temperatures in Timmersain drop to nearly -20 degrees, and the entire region is covered with heavy snow. At this time, local villagers move to the lower parts, as living there becomes nearly impossible.
 

Located in Niti Village, also known as Niti Valley, the cave is around 86 km from Joshimath. Apart from the main destination, the journey itself is a major attraction. En route to the temple, visitors can stop at the natural hot spring in Tapovan. Going ahead, Ghamshali is the major highlight of the region, particularly known for its lush Bugyal (meadows). Various trekkers often visit here around the year to explore the renowned Ghamshali Bugyal Trek.

A Place Missing From Google Maps

The real adventurer loves to explore places that are not visited by many and are often missing from Google Maps. Timmersain Mahadev is one such destination whose exact location is not marked on Google Maps and is visited by only a few travellers.
 

Located in the Chamoli district, the route to this mystical cave passes through some prominent places like Joshimath and Tapovan. Beyond Tapovan, the route to the site becomes challenging and full of adventure. At some points, the landscape gives you a glimpse of Ladakh, while at others, it feels as if you are in the Kashmir Valley.

Timmersain Cave- Baba Barfani Temple

Also known as Baba Barfani, the Timmersain Mahadev Cave is located around 1 km from the main road. Visitors need to hike a distance of 1 km to reach the cave. The trail is well-paved and can be climbed easily. The entire region is filled with awe-inspiring views; so much so that it becomes hard to distinguish which particular spot or view is the most breathtaking.
 

Spring is the most ideal season to visit Timmersain, as during this time you can easily witness the naturally formed ice Shivling. By the end of May, the Shivling melts and disappears completely. However, people still visit here after that to enjoy the scenic beauty of the region. Irrespective of the season, the weather here always remains cold.

Permit Request

Being the first village of Uttarakhand, Niti Valley is located near Indo Indo-China border. Earlier, to access the site, visitors needed a special permit issued by the District Magistrate of Joshimath. Now, visitors are not required to obtain a permit to access the region. However, one needs to keep their photo identification proof as it will be checked at the Army Check Post.

Accommodation

Visiting Timmersain Cave is not a one-day tour; it requires at least three days to enjoy the site fully. During the journey, visitors can easily find accommodation facilities in Joshimath and Tapovan. Beyond these two points of the route, the accommodation options become limited, as most of them are homestays, particularly available in Bampa, Gamshali, and also in Niti Valley.

Food Guide

Various food and tea stalls are available at the major points after Joshimath. During your stay at Ghamsali, visitors will be served simple home-cooked meals.

Important Tips for Visitors

• In the absence of direct transportation, visitors must hire a taxi or travel in their own vehicle.
• Joshimath is often crowded, especially during the Char Dham Yatra. It is advisable to book your stay at Hailang.
• If you are unable to reach Niti before dusk, it is advisable to stay at either Tapovan or Ghamsali.
• Homestays with basic amenities are available at Ghamsali and Niti, while Tapovan offers better stay options.
• Always book your accommodation in advance.
• If travelling by your own vehicle, ensure your fuel tank is full, as there are no fuel stations beyond Joshimath.
• Carry essential woollen clothing, irrespective of the season.
• Carry adequate cash as digital payments and ATM's may not be available post Joshimath.
• Visitors are not required to obtain a permit to access the region.
• Carry a valid photo identification, as it must be submitted at the Army Check Post before Malari Village.
