Sati Kund Haridwar
About
Sati Kund, the sacred site where Goddess Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire of Daksha Yagna, is located in Kankhal, Haridwar. The site lies just 1 km away from the Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The large size of this kund tells us the grandeur of the Yagna that was once performed here. Several people who visit Haridwar or the Daksha Mahadev Temple also visit this ancient and revered site. However, despite its immense religious importance, the site is not well-maintained and appears to be in dilapidated conditions.
Significance of Sati Kund Kankhal
At the centre of the Sati Kund, there is a sacred spot where devotees, along with priests from the Sati Temple (located opposite to the site), light a diya. Daksheshwar Mandir also houses a Sati Kund, which is just for reference purposes; the actual Kund where yagna takes place is located here.
Sati Kund is one of the most ancient sites in Haridwar that highlights its religious importance. It is believed that it is the same place where Goddess Sati, the consort of Lord Shiva, sacrificed herself.
Mythological story of Sati Kund
Goddess Sati was the daughter of King Daksha, who was not happy with her decision to marry Lord Shiva. Once, King Daksha organised a grand Yagna and invited all the gods, except Lord Shiva. Despite this, Goddess Sati attended the Yagna without Shiva. Upon seeing her, King Daksha started hurling harsh and insulting remarks about Lord Shiva. Sati was deeply humiliated after receiving such remarks from her father and leapt into the sacrificial fire.
