About

Saptrishi Ashram is one of the most beautiful and scenic religious sites in Haridwar. Known for its calm and peaceful environment, the Saptrishi Ashram is located near Shanti Kunj. Established in 1943 by Goswami Guru Dutt Ji, it is one of the oldest ashrams in Haridwar. Situated on the banks of the holy River Ganga, Saptrishi Ashram is named after the seven great sages (Saptrishis). It is believed that Maharishi Bhagirathi divided the Ganga into seven streams at this place; hence, it is also called Sapt Sarovar.

Saptrishi Ashram in Haridwar

Haridwar is known for several popular ashrams, and among them, Saptrishi is one of the oldest and most significant. Located near Shanti Kung Gate No 1 and Bharat Mata Mandir, the Saptrishi ashram is easily accessible by local transportation. From Har Ki Pauri, the Saptrishi ashram is approximately 7 km away.

Spread over 35 acres, the ashram complex includes eight temples, 45 kutias, a panchkarma centre, a satsang hall, schools and a gaushala. The lush green surroundings and peaceful ambience make it an ideal place for visitors seeking peace and solace.

The ashram houses several temples dedicated to different deities, though it is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva. Every morning, Rudri Pooja is performed by the priest. Within the ashram complex, there is a Kirti Stambh, which was built in memory of the ashram's founder, Goswami Ganesh Dutt Ji.

History of Haridwar Saptrishi Ashram

According to a great legend, the seven sages, Rishi Bharadwaj, Rishi Jamadagni, Rishi Vishwamitra, Rishi Gautam, Rishi Atri, Rishi Kashyap and Rishi Vashishth, once decided to meditate on the banks of the river Ganga. However, they were unable to concentrate due to the loud gushing sound of the river.

Seeing this, the sages used their spiritual powers and stopped the flow of the Ganga at this very point. Realising this, Maharishi Bhagirathi, who had brought the Ganga to Earth, divided the Ganga River into seven streams. With this, the gushing sound of Ganga reduced, allowing the sage to meditate peacefully. This is why the site is also known as Saptsarovar.

Saptrishi Ashram Yagyshala

Within the ashram premises, there is a sacred Yagyshala that houses an eternal flame. This sacred fire was lit in 1954 by the first president of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad Ji, and is believed to have been burning continuously for 101 years.
