Pandava Cave

Pandava Cave, associated with the Pandavas, holds great cultural and historical significance. It is believed that the cave was built by the Pandavas during their exile; which is now a major attraction among people fascinated by the legends of the Mahabharata. The cave is located near the prominent Shiva Temple in Lakhamandal and is also known as "Gupteshwar Mahadev". Inside the cave, visitors can find a Swayambhu Shivling (appeared naturally), which is used to be worshipped by Pandavas during their stay. Earlier, the cave was accessible to visitors, but due to safety concerns, access is now limited to only some meters.

Due to its mythological significance, it draws many people. The cave remains open round the year, and is just a few minutes away from the Lakhamandal Shiva Temple. Upon entering, visitors experience a unique energy and feel a deep connection to ancient times. It is said that the other end of the cave opens inside the Lakhamandal Shiva Temple.
 

History of Lakhamandal Pandava Cave
 

The Pandava Cave situated in Lakhamandal dates back to the era of Mahabharata, a period when Pandavas were in exile. During this period, Pandavas sought refuge in many places and Lakhamandal was one of them. Built by the Pandavas, the length of the cave is around 1 km. As per folklore, the Pandavas used this cave as a hideout to escape from Kauravas. While residing here, they worshipped Lord Shiva and built lakhs of Shivlings, which is why the place is known as Lakhamandal.
 

According to another legend, the Pandavas used this cave to escape from the Wax Palace (Lakshagraha), which was built by the Kauravas to kill them during their exile. However, some other ancient scripts said that the Wax Palace was located in Uttar Pradesh.
 

Location and Connectivity
 

Pandav Cave is located in a small village of Uttarakhand's Jaunsar Bawar region. From Dehradun, you can reach the site via two routes: one is Dehradun-Vikasnagar route, which is around 121 km, and the other is Dehradun-Mussoorie route, around 109 km. However, none offer direct transportation options like buses and taxis. The only way to reach the site is by hiring a taxi or using a private vehicle. The journey to Pandav Cave takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on road conditions and driving skills.

• The cave is open round the year, but the ideal time to visit is from September to April.
• Stay for at least a day to experience the beauty, history and culture of Lakhamandal.
• Accommodation options in the area are limited, so those planning to stay nearby should check availability in advance.
• During monsoon, you may encounter problems like road blockage, landslides, and rockfalls. It is good to avoid visiting during the rainy season.
• Carry sufficient cash during the journey, as network connectivity and ATM facilities are limited in the area.
• Petrol pumps are also limited in the area, the nearest one is around 14 km from the site. It is good to refuel your vehicle whenever you find a station.
• Summers are pleasant but morning and night may feel cold, so carrying woolen essentials is necessary.
• Bring essentials medicines, as the site is not equipped with good medical stores.
• Do not forget to enjoy the local cuisine from the local food stalls.
• Paid parking is available near the temple.
• Drive cautiously, especially in landslides and rockfall prone areas.
• If travelling by private vehicle, do not forget to keep tire inflators, puncture kits and other emergency items.
