About

Karnaprayag is one of the Panch Prayag of Alaknanda river. It is a small town of Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, which is situated on the confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar River. The town derives its name from the mythological figure Karna, who is said to have worshiped the Sun God, Surya, at this location. According to mythology, Karna received an unassailable shield after years of penance, which makes him invincible in the battle. It is believed that there are no other temples dedicated to Anga-Raja Karna apart from the one in Karnaprayag. Additionally, you will also find an ancient Uma temple dedicated to goddess Sati, the first wife of Shiva. It is also believed that Lord Krishna performed the last rites of Karna in Karnaprayag. Along with this Swami Vivekanand also performed mediation for around 18 days there with his gurus. Karnaprayag also connects to other famous places such as the Valley of Flowers, Badrinath, and Kumaun region via NH-9.
