Bhimgoda Tank Haridwar

Bhimgoda Tank is another sacred place in Haridwar. It is an ancient and historical site associated with the Pandavas of the Mahabharata. It is believed that Bhima, after receiving instruction from Mahadev, stuck his knee on the ground. At the spot where he struck his knee (goda), a stream of the Ganga emerged, which the Pandavas used to quench their thirst. Since then, the tank has remained filled and came to be known as Bhimgoda. It is believed that the water of the Bhimgoda possesses healing and purifying properties, which attracts devotees from various places.

Bhimgoda Tank

Named after Bhima, the second of the five Pandavas, Bhimgoda Tank is located near Har Ki Pauri. Devotees can easily reach the site using local transport or just by walking a short distance. The site offers a peaceful atmosphere and houses a temple dedicated to several deities. The tank is situated in the centre of the premises, which also houses a sand Shivalinga.
 

It is believed that this sand Shivalinga was made and enshrined by Bhima. While placing the same, his footprint is also marked on the nearby stone, which is so huge that it can be seen easily. Every year on the auspicious month of Shravan, Bhimgoda Tank attracts a large number of devotees.

After climbing a few stairs, pilgrims can see a small temple where the idols of Lord Krishna, along with Pandavas, their mother Kunti, and Draupadi are installed. Adjacent to it, there are small idols of Mata Kunti and Maa Mansa Devi. In addition, the temple complex also houses an idol of Lord Hanuman, where devotees can seek their blessings.
 

On the other hand, there is a small cave believed to be of Kaal Bhairav, which offers a cool and calm environment.
 

Another major attraction of Bhimgoda Tank is the 11 small Shivlingas placed on a single Shivling-shaped stone. According to the priest, these Shivlingas date back to the Mahabharata period.

Bhimgoda Tank History

According to mythology, after the epic Mahabharata, the Pandavas, along with Draupadi, proceeded towards the Himalayas. During their journey, they halted at Haridwar. Feeling thirsty, the Pandavas searched for water here and there, but were unable to find a single drop. They then start worshipping Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva instructed Bhima to strike the ground with this knee, saying that water would emerge from it. Bhima did the same, and as soon as he struck the ground, a stream of the Ganga River emerged. After drinking this water and quenching their thirst, the Pandavas continued their journey.
