When we talk about the prominent landmarks of Rishikesh, names like Ram Jhula, Laxman Jhula, Parmarth Niketan and others often come to mind. However, there is one shrine from which the city derives its original name, Hrishikesh, now commonly known as Rishikesh. The sacred place we are talking about is the "Bharat Mandir". 
 

Bharat Temple is an ancient shrine where the idol of Bharat Ji was re-enshrined by the revered Hindu saint Shri Adi Shankaracharya Ji in 789 AD. The temple is dedicated to Lord Hrishikesh Bharat Ji Maharaj, who is believed to be none other than Lord Krishna himself. 
 

The antiquity of this temple can be understood from the fact that it is mentioned in several religious texts, such as the Shrimad Bhagwat, the Mahabharat, Vamanpuran, and Narsingh Puran. Within the temple premises, devotees can witness sacred trees, which are believed to be over 250 years old. These include the Vat Vriksh, Bail, and Pipal trees, which collectively symbolise Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh (the Tridev).

Rishikesh Bharat Temple

Rishikesh, known as the Yoga Capital of the world, is home to numerous ancient shrines that reflect the deep reverence of Hindu Mythology. Among these sacred sites, the one that narrates the history of the city is the Bharat Temple. Located close to Triveni Ghat, Bharat Temple is hardly one kilometre away from the Rishikesh bus stand, making it easily accessible.
 

Due to a lack of information, many pilgrims mistakenly associate this temple with Bharat, the younger brother of Lord Rama. Although the city does house the Shatrughna Temple, Bharat Mandir is not linked to Lord Rama's brother Bharat, but to Lord Hrishikesh.
 

It is believed that the great sage Raibhya Rishi performed a great penance to please Lord Narayan. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and said I will reside here forever as Hrishikesh Narayana, and the place will be called Hrishikesh.

Two Important Days

It is believed that on the auspicious day of Basant Panchmi, Adi Guru Shankaracharya ji enshrined the idol of Bharat Ji. Seeking this reverence, Basant Panchmi is celebrated with great devotion every year. On this day, the Shaligram is carried out in a ceremonial process for a sacred bath at Mayakund. Thousands of devotees gather here to witness and participate in this holy ritual. 
 

Another important day that brings several devotees to the shrine is Akshaya Tritiya. This is the only day when the feet of Bharat Ji Maharaj are uncovered for darshan. According to legends, if a devotee completes 108 parikrama (circumambulations) and then seeks the blessing at the uncovered feet of Lord Shri Hrishikesh Bharat ji, their desire will be fulfilled. The parikram is so popular among the devotees as it is considered equivalent to the Badrinath Journey.

Rishikesh Bharat Mandir Museum

Upon entering the shrine, the intricate carving and design on its pillars speak about its great antiquity. The temple complex also houses a dedicated museum, displaying ancient idols and sculptures of various deities that were destroyed by the Mughals during their reign. Later, these artefacts, placed in the Museum, were excavated by archaeologists and historians from the site.

History and Mythology of Bharat Mandir

Legends state that, after the epic Mahabharata, the Pandavas visited this sacred site to seek blessings from Lord Hrishikesh Narayan Ji. It is said that during the Ashoka period, the temple was converted into a Buddhist monastery, as Lord Buddha is believed to have visited the place. During the excavation process, historians and archaeologists also found a sculpture of Lord Buddha, which is now placed in the temple premises.

Devotees can visit the Bharat Mandir during its opening time. The temple opens daily for the devotees with two separate visiting slots. Before visiting the temple, devotees must check the temple's opening and closing hours to avoid any inconvenience.
