Chopta's lush green meadows are a marvel of nature's creation. Its immense beauty is so majestic that it earns the title of Mini Switzerland of India. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Chopta is located in the Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand. Besides its majestic scenery, Chopta is a haven for bird watchers, as it is home to more than 240 species of birds. Being the epicentre of the renowned Chandrashila and Tungnath treks, Chopta is a hotspot among trekkers.

Situated at an elevation of over 8,500 feet, it offers a scenic and panoramic view of the surroundings. The morning views from Chopta Valley are truly remarkable when the sun's first rays peek through the mountains. The area is prominent for its oak, deodars and rhododendrons forest. In spring, the region is lined with beautiful pink and red rhododendron flowers, adding more charm to its natural beauty. During this time, the surroundings of the region are filled with the blossoming flowers, which create a refreshing and peaceful atmosphere.

Highest Shiva Temple

Chopta is also surrounded by Shiva's most revered pilgrimage circuit, Panch Kedar. Here tourists can find Kedarnath and Madmaheshwar to its left and Rudranath and Kalpeshwar to the right, with the highest Shiva temple, Tungnath Temple, at the top. Chopta landscapes seem like a fairyland for many, which cannot be put into words and is beyond imagination.

Base Camp

Apart from its beauty, Chopta is prominently known as the base camp of Chopta Tungnath and Chopta Chandrashila Trek. These treks lead to the world's highest Shiva temple and the third temple among the Panch Kedars, called as the Tungnath Mahadev Mandir. As a result, the area is usually surrounded by several devotees and adventure enthusiasts.

A Winter Wonderland

Located at a height of more than 2,600 meters, the Chopta Weather generally remains cool throughout the year. However, summer daytime may be a bit warmer. In winter, the region witnesses heavy snowfall, which transforms the sprawling meadows into a thick blanket of snow, making it nothing less than a winter wonderland.

Located in the Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand, Chopta Valley distance from Delhi is around 511 km. Valley is accessible by road from Rishikesh, and for this you can use bus, private taxi and shared taxi services.

  • Booking of accommodation is required, especially in peak season (April to June, and September to November.
  • Direct buses or shared taxis are not available from Rishikesh Bus Stand.
  • Direct bus and shared taxis are available up to Ukhimath only.
  • Carry essential woollens in summer, as the weather can be cold, especially at night.
  • Carry sufficient cash, as ATM facilities are not available at Chopta.
  • Fuel stations are not available in the region; it is advisable to refill your vehicle at Ukhimath.
  • Bring necessary medicine, as medical shops are not available nearby.
  • Mobile network connectivity in the area is limited.

How to Reach

By Road: - Chopta is situated around 207 km from the Rishikesh Bus Stand. The area is accessible by shared taxi and bus up to Ukhimath. From there, shared taxi services are available. 
 

By Rail: - The nearest railway station is Yog Nagri Rishikesh Railway Station, situated around 208 km away. After reaching the station, travellers can take a shared taxi or bus from their respective stands, as both are just 2 km away from the station.
 

By Air: - The closest airport is Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport, situated around 223 km away. The airport offers direct and regular flights to major cities across the country. Rishikesh is just km away from the airport, which can be easily accessed by taxi.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Chopta Valley is from May to December, when you can experience the valley most. Of these, the monsoon months of July and August must be avoided, as it is not suitable for the journey.
