New Tehri is the municipal board and administrative headquarters of the Tehri Garhwal District. Situated at an altitude of 5,740 feet, it was established after the submergence of Old Tehri Town. The town is also famous as the site of Chipko movement, led by Sundar Lal Bahuguna, to protest against the construction of the dam.
