About

Vashistha Cave is another revered spiritual site in Rishikesh. Dedicated to Sage Vashishta, the cave is located around 24 km from the city near Shivpuri on the Badrinath Highway. Devotees and spiritual seekers often visit this cave to know its significance and to experience its peaceful atmosphere. It is believed that Sage Vashistha meditated here for many years, which is why the cave is named after him. The cave is especially popular among those seeking a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of Rishikesh.

Vashishta Gufa in Rishikesh

Vashishtha cave is situated at a distance from the main city, but it can be accessed by taxi or by using rental services. Sage Vashistha is regarded as the Manas Putra (mind-born son) of Lord Brahma. He is also one of the seven great sages, collectively known as the Saptarishi. Near the cave, there is a sacred shivling where devotees offer water and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

It is believed that around 1930, Swami Purshottamanand visited this holy site and established a small ashram near the cave. Today, both the cave and the ashram are maintained by the Swami Purshottamanand Society.

Surrounding Beauty

Once you enter the ashram gate, there are two ways to reach the site. One goes through the stairs, and the other along a well-paved path. As you move ahead, you will be enthralled by the majestic view of nature and the holy river Ganges.

The site is often surrounded by Indians as well as foreign tourists who visit for a spiritual experience. There is no entrance fee to access Vashishta Cave, and the site is accessible to all.

The scenic beauty of the surrounding area makes it a popular spot for pre-wedding photo shoots. Moreover, it also serves as a starting point for river rafting.

During the monsoon season, the flow of the river Ganges becomes extremely strong, so visitors must avoid going downstream.

Arundhati Cave

A few metres away from Vashishta Cave, there is another small cave dedicated to Vashishta's wife, known as Arundhati Cave. Many visitors can be seen meditating here, as the peaceful environment helps them to connect with their inner core.

History of Vashishtha Gufa Ashram

According to folklore, after the tragic loss of all his children, Sage Vashishta was filled with grief and decided to end his life. For this, he went to commit suicide in the river Ganga. However, Goddess Ganga refuses to accept his life and grants him a new one. Following this, Sage Vashishta's wife, Arundhati, decided to build an ashram near the river. Its serene and peaceful environment allowed Sage Vashistha to perform meditation in the cave for many years. Since then, the cave has been preserved and reconstructed by the Swami Purshottamanand Society, and is now known as an important centre for meditation.
