About

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Koteshwar Temple in Rudraprayag is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River. Pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath often stop here to seek the blessing of Shiva. The temple is located inside a cave, where water continuously drips from the ceiling onto the Shivling. As per the legend, it is the place where Lord Shiva meditated while on his way to Kedarnath. The temple is situated on the Chopta-Pokhri road, which is approximately 3 km from the Kedarnath road.

Koteshwar Mahadev Mandir

Devotees from far and near often visit the shrine to seek Shiva's blessings. During the holy Shravan month, the temple is surrounded by the Shaivite devotees. Although the temple is located around 400 metres away from the main road, it is easily accessible. During the monsoon season, the water of the Alaknanda River sometimes enters the cave where the Shivling is enshrined. The temple offers a serene ambience with the soothing sound of the river's flow.

Mythology

According to Hindu scriptures, when Bhasmasur tries to kill Lord Shiva, Shiva hid at this place and meditated inside this cave to seek Lord Vishnu's help. Thereafter, Lord Vishnu transformed into Mohini and killed Bhasmasur.
