About

Bhimtal is one of the major attractions in the Kumaun region. Though the town is known for its various prominent sites, the Bhimtal Lake stands among them. After Tehri Lake, Bhimtal Lake is the second-largest lake in Uttarakhand in terms of surface area.

It is believed that the Lake was created by the mighty Pandava Bhima, from whom it gets its name. The water of the lake is so fresh and clean that it has been used to supply drinking water to nearby areas. For this, the British also built a dam near the lake.

Unlike others, the C-shaped Bhimtal Lake is unique as it features an island at its centre, which houses a beautiful aquarium. The serene ambience of the lake can be enjoyed throughout the year, where you can enjoy boating, paragliding, camping and more.

Jewel of Kumaun

Located in the lake city of Nainital, Bhimtal Lake is admired for its serenity and breathtaking views. Lake lies just 23 km from Nainital and attracts several tourists throughout the year. It was formed after a huge movement under the earth's crust, which later blocked overland flows, resulting in the creation of the lake. Thus, Bhimtal Lake is not situated on any river. Due to its clear water, a dam called Victoria Dam was built by the British to utilise its water for drinking and irrigation purposes.

Unlike other popular lakes in the region, Bhimtal Lake is usually less crowded. Its majestic scenery is perfect for the lovebirds, where they can enjoy boating, paddling, and nature walks amidst its peaceful surroundings. The lake is nothing less than a paradise for bird lovers, as they can spot various bird species here.

There is a temple near the lake, called Bhimeshwar Temple, which further enhances the lake's beauty and significance. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple attracts several devotees who come to seek his blessings.

Stargazing in Bhimtal

Bhimtal is among a few places in Uttarakhand which is usually known for Stargazing. Every year, Starscapes organise an event that attracts numerous visitors. This guided tour of the night sky offers a unique experience for those fascinated by the moon, stars, and galaxies.

Mythology

Bhimtal Lake is believed to have connections with the Mahabharata Pandavas. As per the local lore, when the Pandavas were on their exile, they visited this place. After resting for a while, they became thirsty and looked for a water source, but couldn't find one. To quench their thirst, Bhima struck the ground so hard with his mace that water gushed out from the earth. Later, Bhima enshrined a Shivling near the lake and offered water from it. Since then, the temple has been known as the Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple.
