Gangotri Temple is one of the revered dhams in the sacred Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, this holy temple is located in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand. Every year, several devotees on the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage visit this temple. In the Char Dham Yatra circuit, the Gangotri Temple holds the second spot, followed by Kedarnath and Badrinath.
 

The Uttarakhand Char Dham shrines are a group of four revered temples, with Gangotri being one of them. Each year, this shrine remains open six months, from April/May to October/November. According to the Hindu calendar, specific opening and closing dates for the shrine are announced annually. Generally, the portal of Gangotri Temple opens on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya and closes a few days after the Diwali festival. During winters, the idol of Goddess Ganga is brought back to its winter seat in Mukhba Village, where the deity is worshipped until the temple reopens.
 

Update: The Gangotri Dham portal for the year 2025 was closed for devotees on 22 October 2025. The deity will now be worshipped at Mukhba Village until the shrine reopens next year on Akshay Tritya, on 19 April 2026

Gangotri Temple Closing Date 2025 - 22 October 2025

After six months, Gangotri Temple generally closes in October/November. For 2025, the portal of the Gangotri Dham shrine will close on 22 October 2025. After the closure, the palanquin of Goddess Ganga is carried back to her winter seat in Mukhba Village near Harsil, which is located around 20 km away from the temple.

Gangotri Dham Opening Date 2026

Every year, on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya, which generally falls in April or May, the shrine of the Gangotri Temple reopens to devotees. In 2026, the Gangotri Temple is likely to be opened for the devotees on 19 April 2026. Officially, this day marks the beginning of the sacred Char Dham Yatra. On its opening day, the palanquin of Goddess Ganga is brought from her winter seat in Mukhba Village. To seek her blessing, a large number of devotees gather outside the temple. Along with Gangotri, the portal of the Yamunotri Temple also reopens on the same day, whereas Kedarnath and Badrinath temples reopen a little later.
