During winters, the idol of Goddess Yamuna is worshipped at her winter seat in Kharsali, which is just 6 km away from the temple.

Yamunotri Dham Opening Date 2026

Every year, the portal of Yamunotri Dham opens to devotees on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya, which falls on the third lunar day of the Baisakh month. However, the exact date is announced by the Char Dham Committee based on the Hindu Calendar, Panchang. In 2026, the Yamunotri Temple Kapat will open on 19 April 2026, when the palanquin of Goddess Yamuna is ceremoniously brought from her winter seat in Kharsali.
 

On the same day, the portals of Gangotri Temple also open for the devotees. From this day, the sacred Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand officially begins. The portal of the other two shrines, viz. Kedarnath and Badrinath open a few days later. Char Dham Yatra registration is a must for devotees to visit the Yamunotri Temple and the other dham of the circuit. The Char Dham Yatra registration date generally opens a month before the journey commences.

Yamunotri Temple Closing Date 2026

Yamunotri Temple will be closed on the second day after Diwali, which is also celebrated as Bhai Dooj festival. It is believed that on this day, Yama visits his sister Yami's house, and hence the day is also known as Yama Dwitya. In 2026, the portal of the Yamunotri Temple is likely to be closed on 11 November 2026. Once the portals are closed, the palanquin of Goddess Yamuna is brought back to the Shani Dev Temple in Kharsali. Here, the Goddess is worshipped until the portal of Yamunotri Dham reopens next year.
