Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the second most sacred river after the Ganges, the Yamunotri Temple is located in Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand. The temple is a significant part of the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra and marks the starting point of the circuit. Every year, a large number of devotees who are on their Char Dham pilgrimage visit here. Like other shrines of the Char Dham Yatra, the portals of the Yamunotri Temple remain open six months a year. During winters, the idol of Goddess Yamuna was worshipped at her winter seat in Kharsali, which is just 6 km away from the temple.

Yamunotri Dham Opening Date 2025- 30 April, 2025

Every year, the portal of Yamunotri Dham opens to devotees on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya, which falls on the third lunar day of the Baisakh month. However, the exact date is announced by the Char Dham Committee based on the Hindu Calendar, Panchang. In 2025, the Yamunotri Temple Kapat opened on 30 April 2025, when the palanquin of Goddess Yamuna is ceremoniously brought from her winter seat in Kharsali.

On the same day, the portals of Gangotri Temple also open. From this day, the sacred Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand officially begins. The portal of the other two shrines, viz. Kedarnath and Badrinath open a few days later. Char Dham Yatra registration is a must for devotees to visit Yamunotri Temple and the other dham of the circuit.

Yamunotri Temple Closing Date 2025

Yamunotri Temple generally closes on the second day after Diwali, which is also celebrated as Bhai Dooj festival. It is believed that on this day, Yama visits his sister Yami's house, and hence the day is also known as Yama Dwitya. For 2025, the portal of Yamunotri Temple is tentatively scheduled to close on October 23, 2025. The exact closing date of the Yamunotri Temple will be announced by the Char Dham committee later. Once the portals are closed, the palanquin of Goddess Yamuna is brought back to the Shani Dev Temple in Kharsali. Here, the Goddess is worshipped until the portal of Yamunotri Dham reopens next year.
