About
Situated at an height of over 9,000 feet, the Surkanda Devi Temple is the most sacred site of Hindus. During winters, the temple and its nearby areas receive heavy snowfall, transforming the area into a winter wonderland. Its picturesque view attracts all devotees, adventure enthusiasts, and nature lovers who are looking to delve into the surrounding peace.
Shakti Peeth
The name Surkanda is derived from a Sanskrit word where 'Sir" means head and 'Khanda' means 'piece'. As per Puranas, it is the same place where the head of the Goddess Sati fell after her body was cut into 51 pieces.
Dedicated to Goddess Sati, the Surkanda Devi Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeth, and holds a great religious importance. This sacred site holds immense importance, particularly for the nearby villagers. In addition to Surkanda Devi, two other Shakti Peeths are located in the Tehri region, Kunjapuri Devi and Mata Chandrabadni Devi.

History
King Daksha, the father of Goddess Sati, is not pleased with her daughter as she is married to Lord Shiva. To insult Shiva, he organizes a Yajna, intentionally excluding both Sati and Shiva from the invitations. In fatherly love, Sati attended the Yajna without Shiva. However, upon her arrival, King Daksha hurled derogatory remarks at Shiva. After hearing such callous remarks, Sati immolated herself in the sacred fire of the Yajna.
Devastated Shiva, took the charred body of Sati and wandered all over the region in sorrow. After seeing Shiva rage, other gods requested Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu then commands his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati's body into 51 pieces. These body parts were scattered across the region, and all these sites are now known as Shakti Peeths. It is believed that Sati's head fell here, where the current Surkhanda temple now stands. Earlier, the temple was called Sirkhanda, by the time it evolved into Surkanda over time.
