Uttarkashi is a small town located in Uttarkashi district, often referred to as "Kashi" of the  "North". It is situated approximately 145 km from Uttarakhand capital, Dehradun, and is conveniently accessible by road using bus and shared taxi. Situated on the bank of Bhagirathi river, one may witness the confluence of Varuna and Asi river. Adjacent to the confluence, one may find the popular Manikarnika ghat and may also discover the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in its vicinity.  

Known for its renowned sites like Gangotri and Yamunotri, this place is also popular for its adventurous activities and education. It also houses various ashram, religious sites, and India's top and Asia’s premier Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. Moreover, from Uttarkashi, visitors can travel to other popular attractions such as Dayara Bugyal;, Gartang Gali, Harshil Valley, Dodital etc.

Situated 145 km from Dehradun, visitors may access this place by road. Buses and shared taxis are readily available from Dehradun ISBT. The location is accessible majorly from three routes- one is via Dehradun-Suwakholi- Mussoorie road (150 km), second is Dehradun-Rishikesh road (240 km), and the third is the Dehradun-Vikasnagar-Barkot road (230 km). Additionally, the nearest railway station and airport are located in Dehradun, approximately 143 km and 169 away, respectively.

Known for its religious piety and adventurous activities, visitors may explore this place throughout the year. However, the most favourable time, from both tourist and devotees perspective, is from February to May and September to December. It is advisable to refrain from this place during peak monsoon and winter seasons.

It is located at an altitude of 1165 meters (approximately), which is around 3822 feet from sea level.
